Chevrei Tzedek is an energizing, inspiring and eclectic community that celebrates Judaism’s power to infuse meaning in all aspects of our lives. Our congregation takes pride in being:
Committed and connected. We are committed to the egalitarian principles of Chevrei Tzedek (Founding Principles) and the values and rituals of Conservative Judaism. We are a member of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, www.uscj.org, and Baltimore Jewish Environmental Network, www.bjen.org.
Inclusive, participatory and expressive. We embrace each person’s ability and responsibility to participate in our communal and religious life. Judaism is not a spectator sport at Chevrei Tzedek. Members lead services, express their views by giving divrei Torah (sermons/discussions), develop and lead creative alternative services, read Torah and take on every ritual and logistical role in the service. Many of us came to Chevrei Tzedek without those skills and learned from fellow members and our rabbi.
This DIY (Do It Yourself) spirit extends to every element of Chevrei Tzedek’s communal philosophy. Members run events, fill all executive and financial functions, set up and clean up, sponsor Kiddush and run youth activities.
Informal and intimate. Chevrei Tzedek’s size is designed for everyone to count, to know each other and form lifetime bonds. You can have as much impact as you want. Everyone is strongly encouraged to join committees, take key roles in activities, give divrei Torah, speak up and participate fully in services. You won’t be lost in a crowd.
Inspired by learning. Exploration, learning and discussion are essential to Chevrei Tzedek’s passion for personal and communal growth. We plunge in through Shabbat Limud “lunch and learns,” Sunday Study Groups with Rabbi Reisner, thought-provoking divrei Torah at services, Adult Education mini-courses and other regular programs. Children and teens have their own education programs. Please refer to Family & Youth. Programs are conducted by congregants, outside speakers and the rabbi.
Diverse. Our members live all around Baltimore, including Pikesville, Owings Mills, Catonsville, Mount Washington, Butchers Hill, Wyman Park, Downtown, Towson and Reisterstown. Our youth attend Jewish day schools, public schools and private schools. We hail from Baltimore, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Annapolis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Memphis, D.C., Israel, California, Texas, London, New Jersey, Ann Arbor and other areas.
Well located. The Myerberg Center is minutes from Pikesville, Mount Washington and the Baltimore Beltway. To get directions from anywhere to Chevrei Tzedek, refer to Location Map. There’s ample off-street parking and outdoor play space. We’ve chosen to rent rather than build or buy a facility. This gives us flexibility while avoiding the expenses and related fundraising needs of property maintenance, capital improvements and full-time synagogue staff.
