Statement of Principles
In 1990, the founders of Chevrei Tzedek wanted to establish a Conservative synagogue located within Baltimore City which would be intimate, informal, participatory and egalitarian. We are pleased that we have achieved that goal. A summary of some of our key guiding principles follows: Tzedakah and Social Justice
Chevrei Tzedek chose its name to characterize the principles around which the synagogue was organized, community and justice. The Rabbi and members are called upon to be actively involved in tzedakah and social action projects.
Affiliation with the Conservative Movement
Conservative Judaism is a progressive dynamic movement which is also founded in tradition. We believe in the continuity of tradition and ritual; we value the evolution of Jewish theology.
Professional Leadership
Our Rabbi teaches us and guides us through life cycle events and ritual observances.
Services
Chevrei Tzedek serves the life cycle needs of its members including bar and bat mitzvahs, funerals and weddings. We have services on Shabbat and throughout the year on Jewish holidays and observances.
Egalitarian
Chevrei Tzedek recognizes that women and men are equal partners in their commitment to Judaism. Women are counted toward a minyan and participate in all aspects of worship including: davening, leyning and being called up for an aliyah. Women who feel that it is appropriate to wear tallits or kipas are encouraged to do so.
Participatory
We believe in a community in which all members actively participate in the work of the synagogue. All members are expected to provide service to the congregation in addition to their monetary dues. This service can be a contributor to services by davening, leading Torah discussions, through community activities or charitable activities grounded in Jewish traditions, children's activities or by assisting in synagogue administration or building maintenance.
Education
Chevrei Tzedek actively supports adult educational programs throughout the year, and youth and childhood education programs on Shabbat. The adult members participate in this education program for the youth and children.
