Officer Roles and Responsibilities

The Role of Chair is detailed below.

The Vice Chair does whatever the chair needs, and assumes responsibility in his/her absence.  S/he sits on the Rabbinic Oversight and Evaluation Committee together with the Chair.

The Recording Secretary takes the minutes at CC meetings and community meetings and presents them for approval.  This includes recording any votes.

The Corresponding Secretary coordinates all internal and external communications such as the weekly, newsletter, website, and calendar, publishes and distributes announcements of meetings and minutes; is a member of the Communications Committee, and shall perform all such other duties as are incident to the Corresponding Secretary's office. Many of these responsibilities are now coalesced in the preparation of the “Chevrei Tzedek Weekly”.

Jobs/Responsibility of Chair/Co-Chair with Support from Vice Chair:

  • Preside over Coordinating Committee (CC) meetings and General Membership Community meetings.
    • Ensure the following things happen for the CC Meetings (these can be delegated to someone else like ViceChair, but they need to be done)
      • Solicit agenda items ahead of the CC meetings
      • Distribute Agenda and any relevant attachments ahead of each CC meeting
  • Sign and Execute all bonds, contracts or other obligations in the name of the shul
  • Shall be an ex-officio member of all committees
  • Oversee the work of standing committees, special committees, and Volunteer Administrators
    • While the Bylaws say “oversee,” in practice it looks like being available to work with committees to help brainstorm and work through roadblocks or challenges that might arise, and
    • Helping to bridge communication channels between committees that may be pursuing overlapping interests (e.g. ECPC often has speakers and programs that overlap with Israel Action, or Social Action)
  • Represent the shul to outside organizations except for those organizations where the Rabbi must be the representative
  • Meet 2-3 times each year with ROEC (Rabbinic Oversight and Evaluation Committee) to establish/evaluate Rabbinic goals and job performance reviews
  • Make weekly announcements at services (can be a shared responsibility with other officers)
  • Act as both manager to the Rabbi (in terms of contract adherence and overall performance) and
  • Partner as lay leader with Rabbi (spiritual leader)

Non-Bylaws items that are helpful:

  • Help think strategically on how to move the congregation toward sustainability, thorough financial, leadership, and membership lenses
  • Routinely meet with Rabbi (weekly or every couple of weeks) to discuss any items of interest or concern. In practice it helps to become familiar with some procedural aspects of the bylaws.
  • Ensure that critical administrative leadership functions are filled and that leaders are developed to fill them
  • Routinely meet with the Exec team for same reason (frequency is dependant on what’s going on in the congregation and community) including for health-related / operational questions
  • Note: Upcoming Rabbnic Contract will run through 6/30/2023 with the option to extend to 6/30/2024
