What is Midrash and why do they say such things about it?

"Our father Jacob didn't die." Really? We will read and discuss some outlandish comments by the Talmudic Rabbis on biblical verses (like this one), seeing how this genre of teaching, which later contributed much to Rashi's commentary to the Bible, developed and why. We will also see how not every Rabbi of the period was happy to hear such talk.
